RTI Activist Jeet Ghatge’s RTI Reveals 42-47% Vacancies In Mumbai Police !!

12 July 2011, Mumbai: RTI Activist Jeet Ghatge  had filed an RTI with the Mumbai Police for knowing Vacancies of PSI’s & API’s   according to the RTI reply received from Mumbai Police Commissioner office on 20 June 2011, there is a serious vacancy of PSI and API around various police stations.

Among 1735 sanctioned posts of PSI a whopping 822 are vacant (47%) whereas among 605 sanctioned posts of API 259 are vacant (42%). Personally I think the sanctioned post are itself less if we compare the ever growing population of Mumbai and above that if 50% of them are vacant we can imagine the deep impact its having on the law and order situation in Mumbai.

PSI’s and API’s do most of the important work when an FIR is registered …  from investigating to filing

chargesheet. In my previous RTI regarding D.B. Marg Police station only 9 chargesheet were filed out of 1737 FIRs registered in the Police Station from 1st Jan 2005 to 1st Jan 2011. This is one of the effects of short man power. It seems no one is bothered to do their basic duty.

(I happen to meet D.B. marg Sr. police inspector where he told me that there was a mistake in that RTI and a corrected copy has been sent to me but its been months and no such ‘corrected’ copy has been received by me. Incidently some journalist did not do that story believing the police that it was a mistake.I have now asked the same figures from
all the police stations)

This is ‘basics’ of having an effective police force. Since the posts are already sanctioned money is not the problem its the irresponsible behavior of senior bureaucrats and our great Home minister Mr. R.R. Patil who has been in chair since 7 years.
