MMRDA Caught By RTI Activist For Flouting Their Own Norms

15 April 2011 No Comment

MMRDA is red-faced, having been caught out by RTI activist Sulaiman Bhimani who exposed its dirty doings with a score of big builders in 32 SRA projects of Mumbai. Bhimani’s RTI expose revealed that MMRDA was gifting a score of big builders at least Rs 640 crore of public money. So MMRDA has now been asked to exit housing.

That must come a bad news to the builders, who have been allowed to get away with murder in the tenure of Ratnakar Gaikwad as Metropolitan Commissioner. His successor, it appears, is not in the mood to make a sharp departure from the traditions set up by Mr Gaikwad, who is now Chief Secretary. After Mr Bhimani pointed out that the 48-storey structure with parking basements that RNA Corp was building at Oshiwara was largely unauthorized, MMRDA promptly issued a stop work notice around a month back; Bhimani learnt this from this RTI Reply (see red-circled para on last page): http://www.box.net/shared/46nk0v1fuq

But, even today, one month on, RNA’s construction work on the site continues unabated, as these photographs taken today show (see attached). You can download High-resolution images here: http://www.box.net/shared/rhux2flhkq

Bhimani has lodged several formal complaints, including this one: http://www.box.net/shared/lde5z9nybo

So far, his complaints are to no avail. At MMRDA, it’s business as usual.
